  • Finally managed to join an Offbeat Drive with OAD over the Republic Day weekend. Fantastic experience at multiple levels. Firstly, the glamping is top class and all luxuries are taken care of despite the camp being completely mobile with zero trail. Ravi & Carmen have an eye for detail and it shows everywhere. Secondly, the food is great if not outstanding (and that's a big compliment for a camp). We were a mixed bag of campers with diets ranging from pure non- vegetarian to pure Jain but Ravi & Carmen managed to keep the culinary quotient quite high. Thirdly, the campsite location was fantastic. Having travelled through that region multiple times, I have to say that their knack of picking spots is unparalleled (and we get benefit of the long hours invested by them in reconnaissance). Fourthly, as we were told in the introductory briefing, this was a self drive adventure and not merely camping. The journey was as much important as the destination, if not more. And it was. Armed with radios, the entire convoy zoomed across offbeat village roads with picturesque scenery. Ravi has amazing local knowledge everywhere and knows multiple routes to any destination. As someone who loves exploring the roads less travelled, that was the zenith for me. Each road journey was curated to deliver an outstanding experience. Last but not least, I would like to believe that Ravi and Carmen have cracked the algorithm of getting only awesomely nice people (like me ) to join their adventures. Quite amazing how folks who were strangers on day 1 had become friends by the end. The campfires, guitar, barbecues and radio callsigns helped develop bonding, but don't estimate the importance of sharing clean hygienic modern biodegradable loos!!! Having said all the positives, the one suggestion I would have is that they need to share a few more details about the itinerary. The surprise element is truly fantastic but it could really help folks to know a bit more about actual timelines, especially at the start and end. Net net, it's a simply fantastic experience and I can't believe anybody who has experienced it would have a different opinion. At the cost of prolonging this review post, I have to share the words of Frost's "The Road Not Taken" because I remembered them multiple times while driving over the weekend. And for all of us caught in our daily routine, it's so much more deeper than just about driving on roads... "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference."

Its said that "God is in the details". This couldn't be more fitting for the Offbeat drives team. Exemplary detailing of everything from the drive, the exclusively secret venue, the stay, the arrangements, the food.... what can I say. The fact that I have been more than once and that I'm yearning for the next is enough proof that these guys are doing a super job. Glamping at its best. Carmen and Ravi are great hosts and make your experience feel like a family holiday. Describing the experience won't do any justice to it, so will let you experience it for yourself. If you love driving and live the feeling of camping without its impediments then you really want to go with OBD. It's the best way to bond with family and friends and seeing India from another perspective. I'm waiting for my next experience already.

When you are into a niche business, you have to be exemplary or you won't take off and be successful. The fact that nearly all of offbeat's drives get sold out is a testimonial to the fact that they are doing it right. I'm not going to spoil the thrill by getting into the details of how their luxury glamping is organised but urge you to go find out for yourself and be pleasantly surprised. You can thank me later for suggesting the perfect holiday getaway option 😉

Me & my wife Lopa had a great time with the OAD team for the Diwali weekend. Ravi & Carmen are excellent organisers with a keen eye for detail. The holiday was planned meticulously and we look forward to joining them for more in the near future.
